register 1.2m illegal foreign workers in 10 days

PUTRAJAYA: The government is confident of registering 1.2 million illegal foreign workers under the Illegal Immigrant Comprehensive Settlement Programme (6P) in 10 days, said Home Affairs Ministry secretary-general Tan Sri Mahmood Adam.

Mahmood said apart from opening four more One-Stop Centres (OSC) which would operate 24 hours, 336 management companies had also been permitted to register illegal foreign workers.

“We are dealing with the employers now and we are no longer handling individual illegal foreign workers. The total should not be a problem as we have the experience. We hope to complete the exercise with the cooperation of all relevant parties in 10 days.

“This morning I visited several new places and saw the crowd was manageable as we have opened up more centres.

In Kuala Lumpur alone, we have added three more centres as 90 per cent of the illegal foreign workers and employers are in Kuala Lumpur,” he told a media conference after a media appreciation ceremony for the ministry’s successful Anti-Human Trafficking and Anti-Migrant Smuggling Campaign, here yesterday.

The four new OSCs are Dewan Balora Perdana in the National Registration Department Headquarters (JPN) at Precint 2 and the Imigration Office (Passport Branch) in Precint 15 in Putrajaya; the Home Ministry Complex in Jalan Duta, Kuala Lumpur and the Port Klang Immigration branch office , Jalan Depoh, Port Klang.

Mahmood also said that the existing OSCs at the Legalisation Centre, Immigration Headquarters in Putrajaya, KDN Complex in Johor Bahru and Bandar Seberang Jaya in Penang would also be operating for 24 hours until Jan 10.

He said the latest move taken by the Immigration Department to add several more OSCs was aimed at futher smoothening the registration process and reducing congestion.

He said KDN had also permitted management companies to register illegal foreign workers on behalf of employers on condition that they brought authorisation letters from employers.

Asked if there was a possibility of extending the registration date, Mahmood said it depended on the decision of the government even though he felt the period provided to employers was adequate.

“We carried out all the initiatives to assist employers and the public to enable them to register their respective illegal foreign workers, in fact many officers and members of the Immigration Department are having blurry eyes from the lack of sleep.

“So, we urge all employers not to wait till the last minute to avoid congestion at all OSC,” he said.

According to him, after the end of the legalisation process, the Immigration Department with the cooperation of several agencies would be implementing the enforcement programme.

“Our operation is ready. Large scale operation would be carried out after the amnesty. If the government does not extend the amnesty on Jan 10, a massive enforcement operation will be conducted on Jan 11,” he said.

He said as of yesterday, there were about 70,000 illegal foreign workers who voluntarily decided to return to their home countries. — Bernama
