Ferringhi beach dogs still a problem

GEORGE TOWN: Beach-goers at the Batu Ferringhi stretch have long been terrorised by stray dogs.

Golden Sands Resort and Rasa Sayang Resort and Spa communications director Suleiman Tunku Abdul Rahman said the problem was not new.

He said hotels in Batu Ferringhi had received some 20 complaints from guests in the last three years.

“We have been forwarding these complaints to the Penang Municipal Council (MPPP) but there is no long-term solution,'' he said.

Council public health standing committee alternate chairman Ong Ah Teong said MPPP took the complaints “very seriously”.

“We will step up efforts to ensure the safety of tourists,” he said, referring to last week's incident when a pack of dogs charged at an Australian tourist and her three-year-old son.

Executive assistant Miranda Tulloch, 39, said locals and tourists helped pull Max to safety.

Her husband David also urged the authorities to “take a serious look” at the water sports zoning areas.

He said the swimming area was too narrow and dangerous.

MPPP recreation, tourism and international affairs director Mohamed Akbar Mustapha said the council's canine unit was sent to the area yesterday, but failed to catch the dogs.

He added that the council together with the Penang Water Recreation Association would widen the swimming area.

Punya la banyak sampai boleh jejas industri pelancongan.
