Former imam gets jail, cane for rape

Johor Baharu: The Sessions Court today sentenced a former imam of a mosque to 15 years jail and ordered him to be given 12 strokes of the cane after finding him guilty of raping a 13-year-old girl last year.
Judge Nua'man Mahmud Zuhudi passed the sentence on Nur Akmal alias Basok Bakri Abdul Kader, 32, after finding him guilty of committing the offence at his house in Jalan Camar 3, Taman Perling, here on Feb 21 last year.
He said Nur Akmal, in his defence, had merely denied committing the offence and had failed to raise a reasonable doubt in the prosecution's case.
"He should have known better, as an imam, and should not have committed such an offence. He should have set a good example and safeguarded the image of the institution he represented," said the judge.
Nur Akmal, who is married and has a four-year-old child, was calm at first but shed tears when he was hugged by family members.
DPP Mohd 'Afif Ali appeared for the prosecution while Sukhaimi Mashud represented Nur Akmal. -- Bernama

Man gets 10 years jail for causing death of teenager

KUCHING: Abdul Rahim Hassan could accept the fact that his son, Taufik, 15, had died but he could never accept how he died.

1 / 1
Yesterday, High Court judge Yew Jen Kie sentenced Abang Ibrahim Abang Ahmad, 21, to 10 years' jail for causing the death of Taufik in Kampung Iboi Ulu, Samarahan, last year.
Taufik whose body was found buried behind Abang Ibrahim's house after he went missing for two days, is believed to have been bludgeoned to death.
Abang Ibrahim was initially charged with murder.
However, the charge was later changed to culpable homicide not amounting to murder after his counsel, Abdul Rahman Mohamad Azmi, requested for leniency due to his family background.
According to a social report by the Social Welfare Department, Abang Ibrahim came from a broken family as his father had left him at the age of 5.
His mother raised him together with three siblings.
Being the eldest, he had to help his mother to provide for the family.
However, his mother died last year, leaving him alone to care for his siblings -- two sisters and a brother, aged 19, 15 and 4.
When met outside the court, Rahim said the judgment was too lenient compared to what Abang Ibrahim had done to his son.
"I accept his apology and I do not bear any grudges against him, but 10 years' jail is just too lenient.
"It has been hard for me not having my son at home."

Parti Pekerja Sarawak bebas letak calon

"Satu lagi parti muncul apa salahnya.

- BERNAMA

Quick police action nets robbery gang

PETALING JAYA: Speedy response by police led to the arrest of robbers not long after they had held up a man at Taman Medan, Section 14, near here.

In the 4am incident on Monday, a group of men armed with machetes robbed a man at a restaurant before driving off with his cash and mobile phone.

The victim, in his 20s, managed to take down the car licence plate number and called the police.

Police managed to track down the robbers' car near Old Klang road within 30 minutes and gave chase.

"We managed to intercept the fleeing vehicle and arrested five men, including three foreigners,” he told a press conference at the police headquarters here Wednesday.

In a separate incident, around 3am on Tuesday, policemen conducting a routine patrol spotted suspicious looking men in a car at a residential area near the Sea Park police station.

When the policemen approached the car, the men quickly sped off, prompting a short car chase which ended a few kilometres later.

Three men, in their 20s were arrested. Police found knives and several tools like crowbars, steel rods and wire cutters in the car.

"We believe these were used for house break-ins and we also managed to link a few previous cases to these men," he said.

ACP Arjunaidi also handed out certificates to the policemen involved in both cases in recognition of their good work.

YPMex-CEO,planner claim trial

KUALA LUMPUR: A former chief executive officer of Yayasan Pelajaran MARA(YPM) claimed trial today to nine counts of abetting its educational program planner to deceive YPM out of more than RM300,000 on fradulent claims.
Datuk Dr Abdul Shariff Hamid, 51, were alleged to have helped Zainal Rashid Zakaria, 43, induce YPM to sign off on a total of RM304,650 in claims purportedly to pay for nine state level school student motivational programs that were never carried out.
He allegedly committed the offences at the Financial Department of YPM at Level 9, Medan MARA, Jalan Raja Laut, here, on June 23, 2011.
The school educational programs were purportedly scheduled to take place at nine districts of Perak.
Zainal also pleaded not guilty to nine counts of defrauding YPM for the same amount via said fictitious claims.
He allegedly committed the offences at the same place on May 25 last year.
Shariff is at present the secretary of the UMNO Overseas Student Clubs while Zainal is still working for YPM.
Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission(MACC) Deputy Public Prosecutor Mohd Sophian Zakaria urged the court to impose bail at RM70,000 with local surety for each accused due to the gravity of the offences which involved such a high amount of money.
Counsel Wan Azmir Wan Majid, acting for Shariff, pleaded for lower bail because his client was very cooperative during police investigation.
"He has even flown on business trips while being investigated and yet he still did not run," Azmir said.
Counsel Mohamed Haniff Khatri Abdulla, representing Zainal, urged for the court to grant his client low bail because he needed to look after his wife and three children.
Judge Rozila Salleh granted RM50,000 bail with one local surety to each accused. She ordered both to surrender their passports to the court.
The Judge fixed May 22 for mention. She also allowed the DPP's application for the court to hear the charges jointly.
Shariff and Zainal posted bail in the afternoon.

Mawan questions G5's political posturing

KUCHING: It is illogical for the five elected representatives who were sacked from SPDP recently to claim support for BN while at the same time planning to nominate their own candidate for Mas Gading in the coming 13th general election.

SPDP president Tan Sri William Mawan Ikom said the political posturing of the five, whose moniker was SPDP 5 before changing it to G5, made no sense at all.

“How can you be supporting BN and at the same time claiming you have the right to nominate your own winnable candidate?

“What right do they have to do so? They are not a political party. It makes no sense,” he said when asked to comment on the G5’s pledge to support BN in Mas Gading and their plan to recommend Mas Gading MP Datuk Dr Tiki Lafe to defend the seat.

The G5 members are Dr Tiki, assemblymen Datuk Peter Nansian (Tasik Biru), Paulus Gumbang (Batu Danau), Rosey Yunus (Bekenu) and Datuk Sylvester Entri Muran (Marudi).

Mawan, who is also Minister of Social Development, said there was no basis for what the G5 was planning to do.

“If you are still with BN, you support BN. That is fair. Full stop.

“Don’t come up with contradicting and illogical statements, and stop all the politicking,” he said after briefing reporters on his plans for the Sarawak Dayak National Union (SDNU).

SPDP Puteri moves to better engage with constituents

BAU: SPDP is stepping up its efforts to get closer with the people of the state, in light of the 13th general election.

The party’s Puteri chief Barbara Mawan said yesterday that they would be organising a host of activities in the coming months, the soonest being a two-day carnival “Let’s Get Together with SPDP” on April 27 and 28.

The event will see a joint effort of all of its party members from all four of its parliamentary seats, namely Saratok, Mas Gading, Bintulu and Baram to unite and interact with the people of the state.

“There will be plenty of entertainment planned during the event, which will be held at the renowned Wind Cave here in scenic Bau,” said Barbara during a press conference yesterday, adding: “Participants are encouraged to wear cowboy outfits.”

She said there would be over 30 booths selling various things, as well as a flea market and a long list of sports and games that would take place throughout the event.

“First time visitors can also take a guided tour around Wind Cave for just RM10. It will also be a great time for all of our party members, from all four wings to come together to defend our seats here in the state,” she elaborated.

The Puteri chief also spoke her mind regarding the recent amendment to the University and Colleges Act and the involvement of university students in politics.

“I believe that the youth of our country have powerful potential and in order to show such potential, we must first be courageous enough to change old, outdated ideas and practices.

“A paradigm shift in politics, so to speak. Our country needs the idealism and determination of the youth, and if you deny them this platform, they will not understand the importance of politics, and the power of their vote,” she said.

Ba'kelalan cashing in on home stay Programme

LAWAS: The cool and serene Ba'Kelalan highland, renowned for its annual apple festival in the world tourism industry, is now eyeing the lucrative homestay programme.

The booming homestay programme in the country has generated positive vibes among the remote Ba'Kelalan residents, here who want a piece of the pie in the growing tourism industry in the country.

Deputy Tourism Minister Datuk Dr James Dawos Mamit was quoted as saying in Parliament recently that revenue from the homestay programme in the country increased by 26.78 per cent to RM15.7 million last year with tourist participation in the programme having increased by 29.8 per cent to 254,981
people.

Dawos said the homestay industry had contributed toward higher tourist arrivals which saw an increase of 21.6 per cent from 161,561 tourists in 2009 to
196,472 in 2010.

For Sarawak, the homestay craze is beginning to reap positive returns when  homestay operators managed to rake in accumulated earnings of RM978,700 last year, an increase of over 25 per cent when compared to the RM780,950 in 2010.

Based on the Tourism Ministry's statistics, 12,612 tourists took up the homestay packages in the state in 2011, with 9,384 recorded in the previous year.

To date, a total of 409 homestay operators have been registered by the ministry in Sarawak providing 539 accommodation facilities and the accommodation
provided is either in the form of individual traditional houses or longhouses.

The Sarawak Director of the Federal Tourism Ministry Office Esther Douglas said the homestay programme in Ba'Kelalan could be the best in the country if
not in the state.

"In terms of hospitality and commitment they are among the best," she told Bernama.

Esther, who went to Ba'Kelalan in February, said plans were in the pipeline to improve tourism infrastructures in Ba'Kelalan under the Homestay
Infrastructure Improvement Development Project in the current 10th Malaysian Plan (10MP).

She said among the the components of the projects were erecting information signages along Mount Murud trek as well as homestay signages at strategic
locations in the Ba'Kelalan area.

"The ministry has allocated RM48,000 for the project to be managed by Lawas District Council," she said adding that it would not only benefit homestay
operators in Ba'Kelalan but the whole community.

Previously to reach Ba'Kelalan via road would be a back breaking experience as the former logging track between Long Luping-Ba'Kelalan road could pose
serious danger to those who have not exprienced navigating the muddy and slippery road that takes up to 12 hours or days to reach Ba'Kelalan during the
rainy season. -- BERNAMA

Grandet Pesta Benak next year-Jabu

SPECIAL GIFT: Jabu receives a surfboard from Patrick Audoy (second right) and Fabrice Colas while Dawos (second left) and Harden (left) look on.
SRI AMAN: Pesta Benak will be held to coincide with the school holidays next year, Deputy Chief Minister Tan Sri Datuk Patinggi Alfred Jabu said when officiating at the opening of the festival’s 12th edition yesterday.
“This would attract not only more local visitors but also those from the rest of the country who have always made Sarawak their holiday destination especially during school holidays,” he said.
The tidal bore is a natural tourism product, according to Jabu, which could be further exploited by the Tourism Ministry in order to attract more visitors to the town.
He urged the federal government, in particular the Tourism Ministry, to continue giving its support to the festival as it could generate lucrative income for the local business community.
Jabu added that he would inform the Sarawak Tourism Ministry to work together with its counterpart at the federal level.
“This will allow the festival to grow and also to develop the tourism industry in Sri Aman.”
Jabu thanked international surfers who had returned for the event this year.
“They have done a great job in putting the festival on the world map –to experience surfing at the Batang Lupar.”
He hoped the participants would share their experience with fellow surfers when they returned home.
“They will become good ambassadors to promote Sri Aman.”
Jabu was later presented with a surf board by two French surfers – Fabrice Colas and Patrick Audoy.
The surf board has travelled the world over – riding the tidal waves in England, Brazil and Sumatra to name a few.
“It will be a memorabilia to be kept by the organiser of Pesta Benak,” Jabu said.
Meanwhile, Deputy Tourism Minister Datuk James Dawos urged the private sector, especially the local business community, to view the festival as an income generator.
He also called on them to invest in the hospitality industry by providing food and beverage, among other things.
“This tidal bore festival is one of contributors to tourism industry in the country.”
Assistant Minister of Rural Development, who is also Simanggang assemblyman, Datuk Francis Harden, meanwhile, suggested that the Sri Aman Waterfront be expanded.
“With a bigger venue, more people would be able to congregate at the waterfront to watch activities taking place in the river.”

Suami dakwa isteri seorang lelaki

Suami dakwa isteri seorang lelaki

Semasa pernikahan ketiga berlangsung, Bahrom masih memegang jawatan dekan USIM.

No foul play in student's death

KOTA KINABALU: Police have maintained that there was no foul play in the death of polytechnic student Andika Alam Usman Duri, who was found hanged from the balcony on a fourth floor apartment at Taman Sri Maju, Menggatal on March 26.

Deputy city police chief Superintendent M. Chandra said police maintained the classification of the case as one of sudden death since the findings of the second post-mortem were consistent with the first.

“The two post-mortems were conducted by different pathologists and both concluded that no foul play was involved,” he said yesterday in response to the call by the family of the deceased for a thorough investigation into the case.

Aisyah Ahmad, the mother of the student, said her family decided to lodge a police report after her relatives found bruises and swellings on Andika’s abdomen, legs, thighs and private parts while preparing his body for burial.

Salahuddin Nafi Bakal Jadi MB Johor.
