Man killed in hit and run while fleeing gunmen

KUALA LUMPUR: A man’s desperate attempt to escape from gunmen ended in vain when he became the victim of a hit-and-run accident.

The man, identified as 36-year-old Wong Ping Yee from Kluang, Johor, was believed to have been ambushed by gunmen at the carpark area of a water theme park near Kuchai Lama yesterday.

The incident occurred sometime after 9pm when Wong, believed to be involved in moneylending activity, was shot at six times while he was in his car, said City deputy CID chief Asst Comm Khairy Ahrasa.

“He was injured on his left shoulder but managed to escape and tried to flee on foot to the highway nearby to seek help.

“However, the gunmen chased the victim for about 300m in their vehicle against the flow of traffic,” he said at the scene.

The gunmen, who were in a four-wheel drive vehicle, caught up with him and rammed him from behind before another vehicle hit Wong from the front, killing him instantly.

ACP Khairy said police were still investigating if the victim was lured there or had been ambushed while leaving a restaurant.

“We are interviewing a few eye-witnesses and also checking if there are any CCTVs in the area,” he said.

Police have recovered a few slugs from the victim’s car for ballistic tests.

ACP Khairy urged anyone with information to come forward including the driver who was involved in the hit-and-run accident.

The body was sent to Hospital Kuala Lumpur for post-mortem.
